Armando Martinez Professional Grant

INTRODUCTION

The Lance and Shield Association is committed to providing opportunities for our professional members to further their education and engagement in the future of our profession. Through financial support, we encourage increased conference participation from the members of the Lance and Shield Association.

IN MEMORY OF ARMANDO MARTINEZ

When someone holds a special place in your heart, impacts your life, or changes you for the better, it’s appropriate to honor their contributions. My father, Armando Martinez, did all of these things and more, not only for me, but for his whole family. It felt fitting to extend the generosity to my new alumni family in order to show how proud we are that you choose to further your education and professional development - the way he showed the pride he had in me furthering mine.

My father was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was never able to complete much college himself. To be honest, I almost had a similar path, somewhat lost in what I wanted to do after high school. Looking back, he was a big reason why I kept going to college and wanting to further my education. He always enjoyed the fact I was going to school.

My goal was to always make my parents proud of who I am and what I’ve done. When I was accepted into graduate school, my father was almost happier than I was, almost. Every month, while at California Baptist University pursuing my Master's Degree, he supported me however he could; he helped me pay for any course, book, or conference I thought would help make me better. He always asked me, “What are you going to get out of this?” I made sure to never take advantage of the opportunities he helped provide me.

One day shortly after graduating, as I was driving him home, in a moment of candor he turned to me and said, “You know I’m really proud of you.” This small moment alone shared between him and me is one that I will always treasure.

My dad passed away in August of 2016, 3 months after he watched me receive my Master's Degree in Athletic Training. My goal is to continue the legacy of giving back the way my father did for me. As Director, alongside the Managing Board of the Lance & Shield Association, we decided to provide both student scholarship and professional grant in his memory, to invest in our future of Alumni of Athletic Training.
